CONTINUUM: LIGHT, SPACE AND TIME

Gallery: George E. Foster, Jr. Gallery of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs

The Harwood Collection: Blumenschein to Bell. For over a century, Taos has been a destination of artist émigrés, drawn to an aesthetic rooted in the landscape and its ancient Native American and Hispanic cultures that for centuries have shaped an overarching narrative for Taos and northern New Mexico. The matrix of this pervasive narrative is the region’s unique high desert aesthetic. Taos, as place, is a sublime experience: at one extreme is its daunting vastness, its overpowering beauty; at the other, its humbling human dimension. The paradox of the Taos aesthetic is this fusion of lofty and humble, of high and low styles that defines the artistic and cultural continuity of the wide range of works in the Harwood collections.
